Born in 1957 in Tucson, Arizona, Pettibon graduated with a degree in economics from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1977. Pettibon has acquired an international reputation in contemporary art for creating illustrative works combining drawing and text. He emerged through the underground punk music scene in the late 1970s and developed a cult status for creating the logo for the band Black Flag. Pettibon is just as likely to explore the subject of baseball or surfing as he is typography, war, literature, or art history., ,Pettibon's work has been widely throughout the United States and abroad. Retrospectives of his work have been held at Philadelphia Museum of Art, Santa Monica Museum of Art, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. Recent solo exhibitions of the artist's work include the Kunstmuseum Luzern, Lucerne, Switzerland (2012); Kestnergesellschaft, Hanover (2007); Kunsthalle Wien, Vienna (2006); Centro de Arte Contemporáneo de Málaga, Spain (2006); Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, La Jolla (2005); and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York (2005).
